Water hardness compared
Water hardness measures how many dissolved minerals – mainly calcium and magnesium – are in your tap water. In Germany it is given in degrees of German hardness (°dH); the international unit is mg/L (milligrams per litre, the same as ppm). The conversion: 1 °dH = 17.8 mg/L.
Classification under the German standard:
- Soft: under 8.4 °dH (under 150 mg/L)
- Medium: 8.4–14 °dH (150–250 mg/L)
- Hard: over 14 °dH (over 250 mg/L)

How do I know if I have hard water?
The clearest signs: limescale marks on glass, fittings or the kettle, soap that hardly lathers, or hair that looks dull and heavy after washing. For the exact hardness value, ask your local water supplier or check one of the online maps for Germany.
Is the Aia Pure shower head an alternative to a water softening system?
